Outline of a Policy and its Procedure

In a typical Welsh secondary school, the Safeguarding Policy serves as the cornerstone of student welfare, committing the institution to actively promote children’s well-being and protect them from harm in accordance with the Children Act 1989, the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, and the All Wales Child Protection Procedures 2008. The policy outlines a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, neglect, bullying, and radicalisation, designating a senior Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and deputy DSLs who receive enhanced training every two years. Associated procedures require all staff to complete annual safeguarding training, immediately report concerns via a secure electronic logging system (such as CPOMS), and follow a clear escalation pathway: initial discussion with the DSL within 24 hours, multi-agency referral to local authority social services if risk is identified, and parental consultation unless it would place the child at further risk. Regular risk assessments, visitor vetting through DBS checks, and termly policy reviews by governors ensure the procedures remain robust, enabling swift, consistent, and legally compliant responses that prioritise pupil safety while supporting teaching and learning.
